Impossible

I'm writing these profiles for the NSBE Golden Torch awards. One of the high school student winners has the most amazing personal motto:

"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by little men who finds it easier to live in the world they were given, rather than to accept the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact; it's and opinion. Impossible is not a declaration; it's a dare. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing"

...How cool is that.

I should be working, but I'm having a bit of writer's block again today. So I'll share a really cool thing that happened last night. I was out at a birthday dinner in Boulder with some fellow Astrobiology/graduate student type folks. We were at the end of the meal and I got up to find our waitress to give her our payment for the bill. One of the other waitresses stepped up to help me find my waitress, but then she stopped and ask "Hey, were you the TA for Extraterrestrial Life last fall?" When I answered, cautiously, that I was in fact said TA, she got excited and exclaimed "I loved that class and you were the best TA I ever had!" The accolades went on for another couple of minutes and I was just floored and truly flattered that not only did she remembered me, but she also felt that I performed my role as a teaching assistant sufficiently enough to warrant unsolicited praise. As someone who aspires to teach young minds, that was probably one of the better moments in my life.

Okay, I'm inspired to get back to writing science stuff...

Just finished my first ride of the season at Winter Park. It was a beautiful day and pretty empty as per the picture. I had a few good runs, but the snow was pretty packed and icy, which made hard work of catching edges with my board and easy work of catching earth with my bum. I'm definitely taking a private lesson this season in order learn how to finally ride on my heel edge; my calves will be so pleased.

Today we move into our new lab. Our advisor got pushed into a new & bigger space by our department . It's mostly done and ready for occupancy and hence we are movers this week instead of PhD students. The coolest thing is that our advisor insisted that there be art in our new workspace and that in general we have a pleasant lab to work in. So, this is what the entrance to our lab looks like:

SO COOL!!!!

Here is a view out of one of windows:

Here's a general view of the lab:

And finally here is my new workspace:

It's awesome!! I love my team, my new lab , my cool advisor and my school!! More about the lab transition later. I got to get cleaning our counters while the guys move equipment.

So I just got back from watching Betsy's brother and the band he's in and they are a blast!!! It's true bluegrass fun! There of course was the basic bluegrass instruments (banjo, fiddle, etc.) and what impressed me most was that they also used a Mandolin! I never really associated that with bluegrass, but was beautiful.

The whole band was so into the music and there were tons of people dancing. Betsy's brother was the bass player and he was just amazing. Below is a picture of him doing a bass solo during one of the songs:

Overall it was great, I bought the bands new CD and it made up for a bad day of football (37-3 Packers...I don't want to talk about it)

Iron Chef & Da Bears

I had a semi relaxing Sunday. It started out with a but of frustration at watching the bears lose to Tennessee. On the one hand I expected the Bears to lose, I mean the Titans were 8-0 for a reason. However, we had started very well despite the loss of Orton for the week and the return of Chicago's favorite disaster, Rex Grossman. It started out pretty well, and our defense was shutting then down for the most part, but then Grossman is as Grossman does and the overthrowing and inconsistent passes ensued. For a minute, early in the 4th quarter I thought we were back in the game...**SIGH**
In other news, I finally made it to an Iron Chef challenge and it was amazing!! My friend Jen started this Iron Chef battle a while back and once per month the standing Iron chef is challenge to ancooking duel with a secret ingredient very much like the real show. Tonight's secret ingredient was chocolate, and the food was fabulous!

I just stepped on the scale today and discovered that my body finally decided to get with the program!!! After a whole summer of hiking, softball and gym visits, I finally started dropping some pounds and I can fit in some clothes that have been hanging out literally for years.

So now I can announce that the "Michelin Girl" Project is now in Full Effect. The goal of this project is to drop ~50 pounds. Also, in the process of doing something good for my body, I will also be working a project to do something good for the world. There will be more details on that so keep your eyes open and more details will come soon!

It's been a while since I've updated. But it's also been awhile since I've had the ability to utilize Lucy, my faithful G3 Mac. Life is rockin right now. Just at School of mines today working on my research and having a good brain day as the idea's are flowing. CU won Maven, yay for that! There may be job opportunities that keep me in Colorado after my PhD because of that good news.
